Jackson 5 The Jackson 5 started in 1964 and topped the charts with the #1 singles “I Want You Back,” “ABC,” “The Love You Save,” and “I’ll Be There.” The Jacksons lived in Gary, Indiana. They were the eldest sons in a family of nine children. They started at Motown Records with Berry Gordy. The Jacksons started their career singing for talent shows and opening acts on bills that took them to places like Harlem’s Apollo Theater, where they won an amateur-night competition in 1967. The Jackson 5 was introduced to Berry Gordy by a former producer named Bobby Taylor, after watching an excellent performance at a Chicago nightclub by the Jacksons. The Jacksons were doing excellent until March 31, 1976. Joe Jackson, Michael’s father, decided to move their record label from Motown to Epic Records. This record label move made Jermaine Jackson leave the Jackson 5 group to start his solo career. Jermaine was replaced by his brother Randy in 1978. The Jackson 5 split up and Michael started his solo career remaining with Epic Records.
